Ann Arbor Public Schools Shares Details of New Virtual School Plan
ANN ARBOR – Ann Arbor Public Schools to offer independent live synchronous and asynchronous virtual learning options for K-5 students for the 2021-22 school year, in addition to on-time in-person instruction full on all AAPS campuses.
Families who live in the AAPS attendance area can register for virtual programs. Families who live outside the district and wish to enroll their students in virtual programs can do so through the Schools of Choice option until June 30.
The new virtual schooling option, A2 Virtual Village, exists for families who are reluctant to resume in-person education before a COVID-19 vaccine is available for children under 12.
Some families also found that virtual learning models were better suited for their children in the past school year, according to the district.
Asynchronous A2 virtual elementary learning allows students and families to learn during times that are most convenient for them and at their own pace. In the fall, AAPS will also be offering A2 Live Online for families who want their children to learn in real time with their peers who are physically in class.
âWe know that we want our students, whether they are with us in person or part of an online learning community, to feel that they are part of our school community; they are connected, âsaid Robin Kocher, director of A2 Virtual Village, in a statement.
Kocher said the A2 Live Online program is similar to the in-person instructional program and includes time away from screens.
âThere is literacy, math, science and social studies,â Kocher said in a statement. âWe’ve incorporated specials and of course the important morning meeting and closing circle time that are part of community building. But you’ll also notice an intervention and enrichment block when we focus on deepening teaching.
“This is a time when students who need extra support can get it, so that they don’t miss out on new or critical work, or it could be the time for children to do some enrichment and development. ‘explore working on passion projects. “
