Evening Lions move forward with revised park plan – Hot Springs Village Voice

Readers may recall an earlier article in the Hot Springs Village Voice about a 50th anniversary “legacy” project for the Evening Lions Club. A recent meeting with Lions Pete Beck and Cristina Davis provided more up-to-date details. After a Lions meeting with POA General Manager Kelly Hale, the plan was revised to incorporate two separate areas for the park.

A canopy, picnic area and sand volleyball court will be installed on the northwest side of the beach. That will still leave plenty of room for other activities such as flying remote-controlled model airplanes and walking dogs, Davis said.

On the other side of the beach, a 6,000 square foot playground will be developed. This shaded area will include a baggo court, a swing, a carousel, a climbing geodome and a gym with slide. The cost of these upgrades, including installation, will be funded by donations raised by the Evening Lions Club.

“Our goal is to raise $40,000 and we’re halfway there,” Lion Beck said. “We will also have signs that will honor those who donate to the project.”

Dawn Schafer of French Architects provided renderings of the concept and a veterans organization will donate a flag and mast.

Davis and Beck said the revised site offers future expansion in the years to come thanks to Hale’s long-term vision on this project.

This playground is just one example of the Evening Lions Club’s contribution to the community. Other examples include involvement with Teen Challenge, the Boys & Girls Club, and sponsorship of sports teams.
