Fairport Harbor prepares to live stream village council meetings – News-Herald

People will soon be able to watch Fairport Harbor Village Council meetings from their homes, offices, or anywhere else with free Wi-Fi.

The village government recently purchased live broadcast material, which will be used to broadcast council meetings in real time via the fairportharbor.org website.

“And then, through our public access live stream page, there will be a link to view the meeting (at a later date) on YouTube,” said village administrator Amy Cossick.

The village intends to live stream the November 16 council meeting, Cossick said.

Currently, the village council holds regular meetings at 6.30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month. Meetings are held at the Fairport Harbor Senior Center, located at 1380 East St.

After COVID-19 became a threat to public health and safety about a year and a half ago, the village council began meeting remotely via videoconference in April 2020. Council members and administrators of the village continued to connect to meetings from their home or office for the next year.

In May of this year, the council resumed holding all face-to-face meetings at the community‘s senior center and also allowed members of the public to attend.

However, after returning to traditional meetings, government officials in Fairport Harbor learned that some people had taken a liking to virtual gatherings.

“We’ve had requests from a few residents and people in neighboring communities, on how they really appreciated the live streaming option,” Cossick said. “This feature allows people to view the meeting as they wish. “

In response to these requests, officials began purchasing live streaming equipment. But they couldn’t find any material available for purchase, due to the current supply chain crisis.

Finally, the village was able to obtain the device it needed from a neighboring community.

“The good news is that the Township of Painesville bought two streaming services, one of which decided not to install, and they agreed to sell it to us,” Cossick said. “This is brand new equipment that the township has never used.”

For people who enjoy attending government meetings the old-fashioned way and being in the same room with legislators, administrators and fellow residents, attending Fairport Harbor Village Council meetings in person will always be an option.
