How Ronald McDonald House helps families with multiple births

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – Ronald McDonald House in western Michigan faces a unique situation they have never seen before. Since August, the house has welcomed 10 families of multiple births.

“We’ve never seen so many at once. For me, it’s just a funny blessing, ”said Executive Director Ellen Carpenter.

The mission of RMHWM is to act as a home from home for families who live more than 30 miles from Grand Rapids and travel to town to seek medical care for their children.

“Our mission is to help these families in any way we can,” Carpenter said. “We provide food, transport, clean rooms, etc. But when there are several, it is unusual for babies to be discharged from the hospital at the same time. So when that happens, we have these brand new babies coming home. “

The facility provides items a mother needs to care for her newborns, such as cribs and room items. Carpenter said they also enjoy providing them with other essentials like sleepers, premature diapers and toiletries.

Since they don’t normally have that many babies at home, they lack some of these supplies.

“We would love to be able to give our families who are bringing these babies back a little set of tools and things that they can use to care for their new babies,” Carpenter said.

RMHWM seeks community support to help families staying there. There is a baby supplies wish list on Amazon which can be purchased and shipped directly to your home. You can also purchase the items elsewhere and drop them off at the facility.

They also accept monetary donations and meals for families.

For a family that recently had quadruplets, support means the world to them.

“Throughout the pregnancy, I feel like we have been so taken care of, supported, as loved by our community. It’s really like bringing us together, strengthening our faith, just to see how everyone you know has kind of become our village, ”said Carrie Imm.

Between the drive from Kalamazoo and the restrictions placed on hospital visitors for their two eldest daughters, Carrie Imm and her husband Devin Imm said that if it hadn’t been for RMHWM, they don’t know what they are. would have done.

“Right now kids are not allowed to visit their siblings at the NICU, it’s kind of a new COVID visitor restriction, so our time here with our daughters is really a really good one.” bonding moment, ”said Carrie Imm. “We can be outside in this very beautiful environment, they have activities that they can participate in and I feel like it is much more than accommodation. It is support for our growing family, it is support for us as we grow up as parents.

She added that while multiple pregnancy can be scary, with the resources available, it doesn’t have to be.

“Our experience throughout the event was really amazing and I would definitely do it again,” she said.
