J&K: Militants break into SPO house, kill him

Suspected militants killed a Special Police (SPO) officer and injured his brother in a shootout in Budgam, central Kashmir on Saturday.

On Saturday evening, militants broke into the house of SPO Ishfaq Ahmad in Chadbugh village in Budgam and fired on him indiscriminately. During the shooting, the policeman and his brother were seriously injured.

Both were taken to a hospital in Srinagar where doctors pronounced the SPO dead on arrival. The OPS brother is in critical condition, they said.

“SPO Ishfaq Ahmad and his younger brother Umar Jan (a student) were fired upon by terrorists at their residence in Chadbugh village, Budgam region. However, Ishfaq Ahmad succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom. Area cordoned off, search operation in progress,” police said in a tweet.

The Kashmir Valley has seen a sudden upsurge in militant attacks this month. This is the third incident of attack by militants in Budgam, central Kashmir in the past fortnight.

On March 10, suspected militants abducted and killed army soldier Sameer Ahmad Malla from Lokipora village in Budgam. Malla, who was stationed in Jammu, was at home on leave when he was abducted on March 8. His body was found two days later.

On March 12, paramilitary personnel Mukhtar Ahmad was shot dead by militants in the village of Check Chotipora in Shopian. Ahmad was also at home on leave when he was targeted by the militants.

On March 21, a civilian was shot dead by suspected militants in the village of Gotpora in Budgam. Police said the militants broke into Tajamul Mohidin Dar’s house and shot him dead.
