Shaker Heights, Bay Village Students Hold Peaceful Walkouts

SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio – Following a mass shooting at a Texas school that killed 19 children and two adults, students at Shaker Heights High School and Bay High School staged a strike to protest gun violence and demand action from lawmakers.

On the East Side of Cleveland, students, with homemade signs in their hands, marched out of Shaker Heights High School around noon and protested peacefully.

Hand held signs read ‘enough is enough’ and ‘I want to feel safe’.

On the west side of Cleveland, students left Bay High School in Village around 12:40 p.m. for the same purpose.

Students in grades 9-12 staged a peaceful strike outside the school to show their solidarity with the Sunsets, families and staff of Robb Elementary School.

The walkout lasted approximately 21 minutes to account for the 21 lives lost. Bay High School has about 800 students, and about 25% of the student body participated in the strike.

School Resource Officer Benjamin Kitchen was on hand during the protest to ensure students were safe as they demonstrated peacefully.

“I appreciate that the student organizers shared their ideas with me ahead of time and chose the least disruptive time of their school day to show their solidarity,” said Bay High School’s principal, Jason Martin. “I see this as a learning opportunity for our students. They have the right to exercise their freedom of expression, and they did so in a very respectful way.
