Woman Arrested on Arson Charges in Montgomery Church Fire | Associated Press
MONTGOMERY, Alabama (AP) – A woman has been arrested for starting a fire that caused $ 25,000 in damage to First Baptist Church in Montgomery, court records showed Monday.
Xiaoquin Yan, 27, was charged with second degree arson and jailed on bail set at $ 30,000. Court records did not show whether the woman, who has addresses in Montgomery and Auburn, had a lawyer who could speak on her behalf.
Yan matched the description of a person shown in the video starting the fires, according to a sworn statement from an investigator. He did not say whether additional evidence played a role in the arrest.
Someone set fire to several places in the church last Friday, according to a report. The building suffered smoke damage everywhere and the flames damaged a bench, carpet and the church desk.
Court documents provided no possible reason and firefighters did not immediately return an email seeking comment. Governor Kay Ivey is among the church members.
No one was inside the church building, which is over 100 years old, and no injuries were reported. The congregation held worship in a parking lot on Sunday due to the damage.
